With so many changes happening so frequently, it can be difficult to keep up with the fast-paced auto world and which model is actually right for you. Is it worth it to upgrade to the latest version? Are you better off purchasing last year’s iteration? Here at Sunset Ford, we’re here to help! If you’ve been wondering what separates last year’s 2015 Ford Explorer from the new 2016 Ford Explorer, you’ve come to the right place. Allow us to outline what’s new this year at our Sumner Ford dealership so you can decide which model year is the one for you.

2015 Ford Explorer

The 2015 Ford Explorer runs on a standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that combines twin turbocharging and direct injection for best-in-class 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual gear changing, this powertrain gives you access to 22 miles per gallon during highway driving. Also available is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that delivers 240 horsepower, 270 lb-ft of torque and 28 miles per gallon during highway driving. If you’d like to up the curb appeal of your 2015 Ford Explorer, opt for the available XLT appearance package, which tacks on 20-inch aluminum wheels, roof rack siderails and an Explorer hood badge, plus black bodyside cladding and a painted magnetic grille.

2016 Ford Explorer

The 2016 Ford Explorer changes the engine options to a standard 3.5-liter V6 that teams up with either standard front-wheel drive or optional intelligent four-wheel drive and a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The result is 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. For 28 miles per gallon during highway driving, select the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost with front-wheel drive, which ups torque to 310 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the top powertrain features the 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 that came standard in last year’s model. Additional exciting changes this year include the new 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum trim level, as well as a new liftgate, taillamps, fascia and exhaust tips.
